From chasing the sunset on our first night together, to adventuring around the island on scooters and ATV's on day two, to their magical wedding day in Fira Stefani with the softest and most beautiful light, and to all the moments (and gyros!) in between, it was an unforgettable experience with one of the nicest couples I have worked with in one of the most stunning locations I have seen.  It was such a treat to have so much time to hang out with an awesome couple who were always down to get the shot.  We joked that I was like their traveling selfie stick. Best job ever if you ask me. :)

One thing I love about destination weddings is the opportunity to spend a couple more days with couples to capture those extra moments and awesome locations.

]]> (Eric James Photography) wedding Yosemite https://www.ericjamesphoto.com/blog/2018/7/yosemite-tenaya-lodge-wedding-photography Fri, 13 Jul 2018 19:17:50 GMT Kanoa & Sara | San Francisco Engagement Session - Shot on Film https://www.ericjamesphoto.com/blog/2018/5/film-photographer-san-francisco-engagement-shoot Some of you might recognize Kanoa here.  He has been my main second shooter at weddings for the past few years and a great friend for many more.  And now...he's engaged!  For their engagement shoot, Kanoa and his lovely fiancé, Sara, had the idea of spending a full day taking photos at some of San Francisco's iconic spots and asked me to take them.  On top of that, wanting something a little different and special and knowing my passion for shooting analog cameras, they asked it all be shot on film, and so of course, I gleefully jumped at the chance.  Almost as high as Kanoa jumps in one of these photos!

 

With a few location ideas they had in mind, mixed in with some go-to spots of my own, we hit the town.  After starting along the windy shores of Treasure Island we walked the Embarcadero for a bit and paused at The Ferry Building for some delicious avocado toast (and one of my favorite photos of the day).  We then cruised over to North Beach and Chinatown before a surprise stop Kanoa set up for Sara at Bob's Donuts, where a couple special order donuts and some ice cold milk were waiting for us.  

 

We then carried on to the Palace of Fine Arts and Golden Gate Park where the late day light was really starting to shine before driving out to Sutro Baths to catch a beautiful golden hour and sunset.  A bit exhausted at this point (those Sutro Bath stairs!) and having all worked up an appetite again, we put the cameras away and Kanoa and Sara took me to their favorite ramen restaurant for dinner to cap off a fun day exploring San Francisco.

A true couple's (and wedding photographer's) paradise.  Add to that the fact that Allie and Blake, along with their entire group of friends and family, are some of the coolest, friendliest and most generous people I have met, it all made for an unforgettable few days that I am so thankful to have been a part of.   Fun people make for a fun wedding, and a fun this one was!  Congratulations Allie and Blake!

The entire trip was an unforgettable experience from start to finish and I am so grateful to have been a part of such an amazing wedding with such an awesome couple!

]]> (Eric James Photography) depot hotel fujix sonoma wedding https://www.ericjamesphoto.com/blog/2017/8/alicia-james-wedding-depot-hotel-sonoma-ca Mon, 14 Aug 2017 17:30:06 GMT Brandi & Kevin | French Quarter, New Orleans https://www.ericjamesphoto.com/blog/2017/8/new-orleans-wedding Brandi and Kevin's beautiful and unforgettable wedding was filled with the kind of beauty, emotion, and uniqueness that encapsulates only the most special of moments and was the kind of experience that makes me so grateful to do what I do.  From their engagement shoot onward, I got to know B & K in the year leading up to their big day and with every detail I learned of their wedding, I became more and more excited.  Brandi and Kevin are two awesome people and one awesome couple, I could not wait to work with them on their wedding day.  With New Orleans being one of my favorite cities and Brandi's hometown, you could say I was downright giddy.  The day finally arrived and it was all that we hoped it would be.  Led by the amazing ladies at Sapphire Events and an incredible team of professional vendors, Brandi and Kevin's dream wedding was brought to life.  I could not have been more honored to be there to capture it along with my second shooter, Edward August, who traveled out from California with me.  From their rehearsal night at Arnaud's overlooking Bourbon Street, to their getting ready time at the charming Soniat House Hotel, to their ceremony at the historic Beauregard-Keyes House, to the second line march through the French Quarter, to their reception at Muriel's in Jackson Square, to the fireworks at midnight over the Mississippi River, and even their brunch a couple days later at Tableau, Brandi and Kev's wedding in New Orleans had it all and was truly one-of-a-kind.  I am so very grateful to have been a part of it all.

I could not think of a better place to celebrate the marriage of Annie and Chris.  Congrats to them both, so very grateful for the opportunity to capture their day!

]]> (Eric James Photography) Nestldown wedding https://www.ericjamesphoto.com/blog/2016/8/megan-shaun-nestldown-wedding Wed, 24 Aug 2016 16:13:15 GMT Quinn & John | Wedding, Santa Cruz, CA https://www.ericjamesphoto.com/blog/2016/7/quinn-john-wedding-santa-cruz-ca I think I had a smile on my face the entire day at Quinn and John's wedding.  These two, along with the their friends and family, are just the type of good people you want to be around and celebrate with.  I didn't want this night to end.  Held at a friend of the family's private home perched atop the Santa Cruz mountains overlooking the Pacific ocean, the location provided an intimate setting with a stunning backdrop.  What more could you ask for?  Except maybe a few degrees cooler on the thermostat.  It was a toasty one around the Bay that afternoon. But with all the love and joy in the air, that was soon forgotten!  And it just made for an even more divine evening. Thank you again to Quinn and John, to one of my previous brides Katie for referring me to them, to Kanoa and Candice for their help capturing the day with me, and to everyone else who helped make this day happen.  A truly awesome day it was.

]]> (Eric James Photography) Napa Sonoma Wedding https://www.ericjamesphoto.com/blog/2016/5/wedding-mont-la-salle-fairmont-sonoma-mission-inn Fri, 13 May 2016 17:22:25 GMT Travel - Death Valley National Park with the Fuji X-Pro2 https://www.ericjamesphoto.com/blog/2016/3/fuji-x-pro2 I attended my first WPPI in Las Vegas this year, a week-long event dedicated to the wedding and portrait photography industry.   I like to travel when I can in early spring before wedding season kicks in to high gear so I decided to drive from the Bay Area and make a road trip out of it.

 

In addition to all of the learning and networking opportunities WPPI provides, I was as equally excited to check out the latest and greatest gear at the trade expo.   I was on the lookout for one item in particular, the newly released Fujifilm X-Pro2.  Being a happy owner of the X100S and the XT1 but feeling they had some room for improvement, I was pleased to see that early reviews of the X-Pro 2 were very positive and thrilled when the fellas at the B & C Camera booth told me they had one left in stock.  I snagged it.  

 

These are a few of my first impressions. In the first week, I put this little camera through the works: one day in the Valley of Fire State Park, two days of wind, sand, and rain in Death Valley National Park, a quick visit to Convict and Mono Lakes along HWY 395, and five portrait sessions in between.  In a nutshell, this camera has been everything I hoped for and then some.   The X-Pro2 inspires me to pick it up and shoot like no other digital camera has done for me in a while outside of a Leica.  It's fast, light, and fun.  The auto-focus is improved, the EVF rangefinder viewing experience is crazy clear and vivid, and being able to preview the exposure setting before taking the photo has never been more easy and enjoyable for me.   I'm usually an Aperture -Priority shooter with DSLR's but the X-Pro 2 has me shooting in full manual mode as it is so quick and simple to do.

 

I love Fuji's colors, but the Acros black and white Film Simulation is one of my favorite new features.  So much so, even the colorful super bloom of wildflowers in Death Valley couldn't get me to turn it off for long.  I decided to go with an all monochrome blog post here (a first for me). I love the ability to fine tune the highlights and shadows in camera, though I hope a firmware update will allow for these custom settings to be saved differently for different film simulations, as I don't want the same settings for black and white applied to my color JPEGS.  I keep having to manually adjust it back and forth or do a RAW conversion later . If there's a better way to do this, I haven't figured it out yet.  The back button AF situation, as many have said, could be better.  The battery life could be better.  I also wish you could have the option to deactivate certain buttons, like the Q button, which I never use, and keep hitting inadvertently.  

 

Overall, though, I love this camera and is something I see myself using a ton moving forward for my business this year.   I'm not looking to ditch RAW files and DSLR's on a wedding day anytime soon, but the X-Pro 2 has me thinking I could do both if I wanted to.  It will definitely be seeing plenty of action this wedding season.

 

Update: July 2016

The Fuji X-Pro 2 has become my main camera for all of my weddings and portrait sessions for the past couple months.  I use three of them on a wedding day and I am very happy with them.

I have since figured out how to set custom presets for different JPEG film simulations (highlight and shadow levels) and arrange them to be easily accessed in the Q button Menu, which I have trained myself not to keep hitting inadvertently. 

I now shoot in Auto-ISO mode 90% of the time, turning the Exposure Compensation Dial to "C" which activates the front wheel command dial to act as your exposure comp dial, with an expanded 5 stops available in both directions.  I use EVF so I can see what I am getting and my right index finger to adjust the front wheel command dial to adjust brightness and darkness.  This makes the shooting experience so simple and effective for me.

I had issues knocking the main exposure comp dial and the diopter adjustment repeatedly as the cameras hung at my sides with the HoldFast MoneyMaker straps so I have secured those two things with black gaffer tape on all of my cameras and the problem is not an issue anymore.

Overall, the X-Pro2 is a joy to shoot with and every bit capable of doing what I need it to do.

How to Shoot Double Exposures on Film

 

One of my favorite things to do is shoot double exposures on film.  Here are some of the basics on how I create them and how you can too.

 

There are two main techniques for shooting double exposures with a 35mm SLR film camera: 1) shooting one frame right after the next using a film camera with a multiple-exposure function, or 2) to shoot an entire roll, reload it, and then shoot the roll again.  First, I will go into the basics of these two methods and then touch on how to expose each shot properly at the end.

 

Method 1:

This is the method I use most often.  I take one photo and then take a second photo directly after it without advancing the film between shots.  To do this, I use a camera with a dedicated multiple exposure function built in.  There are many 35mm and even some medium format cameras that have this function.  The Nikon FE2 and Nikon FM3A are the cameras I typically use.  They each have a little lever that you engage between frames to allow you to reset the shutter without advancing the film.  For some cameras, like the Canon AE-1, Pentax K1000 or Nikon F2, the trick is to press down the film rewind button on the bottom of the camera while simultaneously advancing the film. With some older finicky cameras, this does not work all the time, meaning the film may shift slightly at times, but for the most part, it does the trick.  For some electronic film cameras, like the Canon EOS line or the Nikon F3-F6, there are dedicated buttons for multiple exposures.

 

This is a fun thing to try if you have multiple scenes in front of you that you want to combine and ultimately gives you a bit more control and the opportunity to pre-visualize things a bit easier.  The next few examples were taken this way, one frame right after the other...

 

Method 2:

The other technique is to shoot an entire roll of film, rewind it, reload it, and shoot it again.  This method works for most cameras with a manual rewind system.  It results in images that are a bit more random (unless you take notes for each shot) but can be just as fun.  Since you are loading the film twice, you just need to follow a few simple steps to make sure the frames align for each round. 

 

First, I open the back of the camera, and with no film in it yet, I take a Sharpie or permanent marker and make two small dots on the camera body indicating where the left and right edges of the shutter window are.  I then load a roll like normal and advance the film 2-3 times to get it going. I then make sure to use the rewind knob to release any slack in the spool. This is an important step to ensure that there is no "slip" when you start advancing the first few shots, which can happen with some cameras and cause all your frames to shift and become misaligned.  Once that rewind knob is taut and you have released any slack in the spool, I then use the Sharpie to mark the film itself with a couple lines indicating where the left and right edges of the shutter window are, using the two small dots I made on the camera body as a reference.  I then repeat this step for Round 2 and I am good to go.  This technique also works well for doing a Film Swap with a friend, where you each expose the roll on your own. There is a great Youtube video I found on how to load and mark your film using this method.  You can see it here.

 

Between rounds, just make sure to leave the film leader out when you rewind the film so it can be easily reloaded. This is easy to do with a camera that has a manual rewind knob, as many do.  After finishing the first round of shots, just rewind slowly and listen and feel for the film to "pop off" the spool at the end. You can then safely open the back of the camera and the film leader should be out of the canister, allowing you to easily load it again. 

 

For the photo below, I used Method 2 to shoot a roll of street scenes in New York, and then reloaded the film a month later for portraits back home in San Francisco...

 

Sometimes the film does not align perfectly but it can still yield some interesting results.  Like this...

 

Exposure, Highlights and Shadows:

Regardless of which technique you use, the general rule on exposing is the same.  The most important thing to do regarding exposure is to simply under-expose each shot by one stop.  Since the film is getting exposed to light twice, you essentially want to underexpose or darken each shot a tad so the final image is not over-exposed or too bright.  I simply shoot in Aperture Priority mode, set the exposure compensation to -1, and let the in-camera meter do it's thing. Alternatively, can also just double your ISO setting on the camera and meter normally.  If you are shooting 400 speed film, just tell the camera it is 800. This will effectively under-expose each shot by one stop as well.


In a nutshell, the dark parts of the first image (the shadows) will be the areas the second image will "show through".  The brighter the highlights, the more washed out those areas will be in the final image. Paying attention to where light is, and just as importantly, where it is not, is the key to understanding how double exposures on film render.  Generally, you will get more forgiving results when shooting the darker of the two subjects first (i.e. a silhouette of a person), followed by the second image (i.e. landscape, texture, whatever) but I have seen the reverse work just as well too.  But don't get too caught up on all of this.  It takes a lot of practice and seeing examples to really understand how double exposures render, how highlights and shadows interact, and there is almost always an element of surprise in the results.  That's part of what makes them fun and extra rewarding when you nail it.

 

I've included many more examples of mine below and if you're interested, here are a few of my favorite artists also creating some beautiful double exposures on film: Louis Dazy, Edie Sunday, and Hodachrome.

 

In the end, my best tip is to just experiment.  Embrace the mistakes, the happy accidents and the surprises.  Learn from them and keep creating. The possibilities are endless.

]]> (Eric James Photography) Saratoga Villa Montalvo wedding https://www.ericjamesphoto.com/blog/2015/11/villa-montalvo-wedding-saratoga-ca Tue, 10 Nov 2015 20:09:23 GMT Laura & Brad | Wedding in North Beach, San Francisco https://www.ericjamesphoto.com/blog/2015/11/laura-brad-wedding-north-beach-san-francisco When Laura and Brad's engagement session last year led to a few drinks together at the local dive bar afterwards, I knew I had some awesome new friends.  So genuine and down to earth and FUN!  I can see why they have such an amazing circle of friends and family.   Needless to say, I was beyond excited when their wedding day finally arrived.  After getting ready at the Sir Francis Drake hotel near Union Square, we headed out for their ceremony at the Saints Peter and Paul Church in North Beach, the same church Laura's grandparents and other family had been married in.  Following some photos in Washington Square Park, we headed towards their reception venue across the street for a night of epic dancing, celebration, and even a few lap dances at the Italian Athletic Club (Italians sure know how to party!).  First though, we made a pit stop for a  quick drink at Original Joe's restaurant on the corner.  It just seemed like the right thing to do.  They got a standing ovation from a room full of strangers as they walked in...even the bartender rang the bell in salute.  An awesome thing it was.  The photo of them kissing at the bar a couple minutes later is definitely one of my favorite  moments and shots of this year.  Laura and Brad will forever be two of my favorite people.  Here are a few of the many memorable moments from their amazing wedding day...

]]> (Eric James Photography) California Golf Club San Francisco Wedding wedding https://www.ericjamesphoto.com/blog/2015/10/sara-scott-wedding-california-golf-club-san-francisco Sat, 03 Oct 2015 00:58:12 GMT Ryan & Jasmine | Wedding at The HideOut - Kirkwood, CA https://www.ericjamesphoto.com/blog/2015/9/ryan-jasmine-wedding-the-hideout-kirkwood-ca One of my favorite couples at one of my favorite venues.  Ryan and Jasmine's wedding at The HideOut in Kirkwood, CA was amazing on every level.   It is so refreshing to see couples who really want something unique and these two made their day just that.  Jasmine and Ryan found the venue (and myself) online searching for unique wedding venues.  They stumbled upon my photos from my first wedding at The HideOut a couple years ago and eventually ended up booking this "little cabin on the lake" and myself as a result.  I was truly honored and beyond grateful and excited to be going back to The HideOut, run by one of the sweetest couples you will meet, Tom and BJ.   Ryan and Jasmine really raised the bar of awesomeness with this one...from their home-made decorations, to the delicious food trucks, to the live band, and all the amazing lights they brought in, Ryan and Jasmine really put their own fingerprints on their day making it truly special.  Thank you Ryan and Jasmine for giving me all the trust in the world and allowing me to capture this special time for you!

In between, they exchanged their vows under a magnificent oak tree at Hap Magee Park in Danville on a warm but gorgeous spring day.  Filled with laughter, emotional tears, and lots of joy, Liz and Matt's wedding was one to remember and one that proved that awesome weddings are often exhausting.  As always, I was honored to be the one chosen to capture these memories to be cherished for years to come.

]]> (Eric James Photography) Oakland wedding https://www.ericjamesphoto.com/blog/2015/6/greek-wedding-jack-london-square-oakland Sat, 27 Jun 2015 07:41:20 GMT Kelsey & Dylan | Wedding at the Outdoor Art Club, Mill Valley https://www.ericjamesphoto.com/blog/2015/5/kelsey-dylan-wedding-outdoor-art-club-mill-valley From beginning to end, I loved everything about Kelsey and Dylan's wedding day.  Tucked under a canopy of pine trees and redwoods, they each got ready and had First Look at the Mill Valley Inn situated in the heart of downtown Mill Valley, just a few blocks from their ceremony and reception venue, The Outdoor Art Club.  Preluded by the beautiful sounds of the Garden String Quartet, the outdoor ceremony was blessed with gorgeous weather as Kelsey and Dylan exchanged their self-written vows.  The evening was capped by the high energy and raw talent of an amazing rock cover band out of Chico, The Decades, playing everything from Billy Idol to Bruno Mars to Bell Biv Devoe!  Everything made for one beautiful, fun and memorable day of celebration for this rad couple along side their closest family and friends.  Congrats Kelsey and Dylan!

Afterwards, we took things down to Aquatic Park for some photos at dusk before venturing back to The Argonaut for the reception (complete with a psychic Tarot card reader!), dancing, and a whole lot of fun and celebration!  Anytime you have "Diamond Dave" Hosely behind the music, good times are bound to happen.  And you know what they say about a little rain on your wedding day....Bridget & Jason's special day had it all!

]]> (Eric James Photography) Guerneville Monte Rio Wedding forest outdoor https://www.ericjamesphoto.com/blog/2014/9/wedding-at-the-highland-dell-lodge-monte-rio Tue, 23 Sep 2014 18:59:03 GMT Matt & Candace | An Unforgettable Wedding Day Story https://www.ericjamesphoto.com/blog/2014/9/unforgettable-wedding-claremont-hotel-berkeley As as I walked into the bridal suite to begin my coverage for Matt and Candace's wedding day last month, I was filled with the same feelings that accompany me at the start of every wedding, a mix of excitement and anticipation for the day ahead.  The news I received when I arrived, though, quickly turned this day into one that would be all-together unforgettable, emotional, frightening, and beautiful.

 

When I arrived at the room, I was informed that the groom, Matt, had been admitted to the hospital that morning with intense internal chest problems and that just five minutes prior, Candace was told that, while Matt appeared to be in good health and spirits on the surface, the results of the preliminary tests, while still inconclusive, required Matt to stay in the hospital for a minimum of 72 hours for fear his condition was serious and contagious.  Candace and Matt were faced with two options: cancel and reschedule the wedding, which many guests had already flown in from out of state for...OR... go forward and get married that day...at the hospital.  It didn't take long.  Matt and Candace were committed to saying "I do" to each other on this day.  And so the decision was made.  The show would go on!

 

Within minutes , the plan was set and in motion. The ceremony would be pushed up and held in a small room at the Alta Bates Medical Center down the street in one hour.  As a precaution, anyone entering the room with Matt, myself included, would be required to wear face masks (exception given to Candace, who refused).  The plan was to be back at the original venue, The Claremont Hotel in Berkeley, in time to meet guests as they arrived, to inform them of the situation, and upon Matt's insistence, to carry on with the ceremony, reception, and party as best they could in his absence.  And so my day began.  Like any wedding, through photos, I would tell this story as best as I could.  

 

At this point, the news was still sinking in for everyone.  Parents, siblings, the bridal party.  Fear, uncertainty, and concern for Matt was in the air.   Everyone felt it.  But watching Candace, as she finished getting ready, it was her strength that shined the brightest.   Displaying a sense of faith that all would be ok, she looked beautiful in the midst of it all.  Radiant. Confident.  I then hear Matt on the phone to his best man, "Make sure you bring my hair product and tuxedo".  Matt is one of the nicest, silliest, coolest guys I've met...it was great to hear him sounding like himself.  In a way, their demeanor helped everyone else relax and feel better.

 

At the request (and great idea!) of the family, I video recorded the ceremony at the hospital so that we could play it on a projector screen for the guests back at the Claremont. Led by the loving nature of the officiant Mary Alice O'Connor, a short but beautiful ceremony was held in the hospital room with just their parents and a few closest present.  Matt and Candace exchanged their vows, tears were shed, laughs were shared, and they were pronounced husband and wife.  In a powerful show of support, 27 additional friends and family members waited in the hall and took turns greeting them afterwards.

 

Back at The Claremont, the show went on.  Thanks to the benefit of modern technology, Matt was able to watch the rest of his wedding day and reception from his hospital bed.  Candace carried around her iPhone all night long and using Face Time, provided a live stream to Matt of all the action, giving guests a chance to see him and say hello as well.  We had particular fun with this at the cake cutting!  Matt was even able to call in and deliver a toast and thank you to everyone for all to hear.  It was a beautiful thing.

 

Huge credit to Kathy Marty and her staff at The Claremont, Mary Alice O'Conor (officiant), Spencer Sutherland (DJ), Christal Caladiao (Hair/Makeup), my second shooter Jason Todd who, on top of capturing some of these priceless photos, made a run to Radio Shack to get the HDMI cord we needed for the projector, and to all of the family and friends who were so instrumental in making this day something special.  Oh, and to everyone who got down on the dance floor (you know who you are), way to bring it...I know you did Matt proud.

 

I am happy to give an update that Matt is doing fine.  Eventually diagnosed with an aggressive case of pneumonia, he is officially on the mend, and Matt and Candace are happily enjoying their marriage.  They certainly have a unique wedding day story to tell.  In my eyes, a most beautiful love story if there ever was one.

I had an absolute blast with Amy and Mickey at their engagement shoot in North Beach, San Francisco.  We started things off by quietly snapping a few shots inside City Lights bookstore before walking around the neighborhood chasing the light on a beautiful late afternoon.  Throw in a drink at Original Joe's, a stroll through Washington Square, and some random exploring of some of the area's charming streets and alleys, and this is a bit of what we captured.  Congrats Amy and Mickey, can't wait for your wedding next year!

]]> (Eric James Photography) Flying Cloud Farm Petaluma wedding https://www.ericjamesphoto.com/blog/2014/5/wedding-at-flying-cloud-petaluma Wed, 14 May 2014 20:45:42 GMT Travel | A Week in New York City https://www.ericjamesphoto.com/blog/2014/5/new-york-city-street-fujix I had the pleasure recently of spending a spring week in April in New York City, my first trip to the Big Apple in several years.  In between a few photo shoots I had scheduled, I had some time to explore the city, play tourist, and indulge in some street photography.  Being a wedding photographer, I could not stop thinking how great it would be to shoot a wedding in New York City.  I hope I get the chance someday. From my hotel in the Lower East Side, I set out each day on foot or caught the F Train at the corner to soak up a bit of what NY had to offer...Chinatown, Little Italy, Nolita, Midtown, Central Park, as well as a trip to Brooklyn to visit my old high school friend and his family.   All but 3 of these shots were taken with either the Fuji X100s or the Fuji XT1, two cameras that are constantly impressing me and spending very little time in my bag these days.  All in all, it was an energizing and refreshing week in NYC, and I am already looking forward to going back.  Here are a few of my faves...

The view on my first night from the 7th floor rooftop terrace of my hotel, Hotel East Houston.  Would definitely stay there again.

Jonathan and Mathew, the artists/curators for the mural behind them and a series of other murals across the city.

Katz's Deli, famous for the scene when Meg Ryan fakes an orgasm in "When Harry Met Sally", as well as their pastrami sandwich.


This girl above was singing some beautiful a capella music.  The acoustics in this tunnel with her set of pipes gave listeners an ethereal experience on a gorgeous Easter Sunday in Central Park.

The photo above is my favorite shot of the week.  At Grand Central Station, this little pocket of light on the floor was just begging for a subject to walk through it.  Right when I was thinking about that and setting up my camera, a young girl walks into the light, and does something even better...she stands still, raises her head, and points right up to the window that the light is shining through. I quickly fired off a few shots. About 10 seconds later she moved on and was gone. I stayed another fifteen minutes watching, waiting, and expecting more people to stand there, but she was the only one who did it.  A few minutes after that, the light faded and it too was gone..  This image though and memory remain, and the knowledge, that at least for a few seconds, there were a couple of us who noticed it...

I was on the top deck of the Top of the Rock, when I heard a roar of applause on the deck below me.  The couple hugging in the middle just got engaged amidst a throng of onlookers.  I am now kicking myself I did not run down and give them my business card so I could send them this shot.   I didn't realize it was as cool as it was until I got home. Mystery couple, if you see this, here you go, and congratulations.  I shoot destination weddings too btw. ;)

From their first-look moment at Jack London Square in Oakland to their gorgeous ceremony and reception at the incredible Rock Wall Wine Company along the shores of Alameda, their wedding day was the perfect celebration to their "Decade of Love".  Here's to decades more.

]]> (Eric James Photography) Alameda Jack London Square Oakland photography Rock Wall San Francisco Wedding winery https://www.ericjamesphoto.com/blog/2013/11/jessica-chris-wedding-at-the-rock-wall-wine-company Mon, 25 Nov 2013 17:34:07 GMT Nate & Janay | Fall Engagement Shoot at June Lake Loop in the Eastern Sierra Mountains https://www.ericjamesphoto.com/blog/2013/11/nate-janay-engagement-shoot-at-june-lake-look-eastern-sierras Janay mentioned to me that she and Nate wanted a fall color theme to their engagement shoot.  I told her there may be no better place to photograph the fall colors in California than the Eastern Sierra's in October and I just so happened to have plans to head to the town of Bishop for a few days to do just that.  Being that it would mean a 6 hour drive from San Francisco for them, I figured it would be a long shot, but I invited them to meet me there.  I was surprised, honored and excitement when they responded almost immediately, "We're in!".  Their lovable, adventurous and free-spirit attitude was proven again when they suggested that it would be fun to stand in the river for a few shots.  Janay and Nate are definitely my kind of couple.

]]> (Eric James Photography) Bay Area Wedding Photography Cannery Row Monterey Perry House Wedding Photography https://www.ericjamesphoto.com/blog/2013/9/wedding-perry-house-monterey Thu, 19 Sep 2013 04:01:42 GMT Travel Photos from Italy with the Fuji X100S https://www.ericjamesphoto.com/blog/2013/7/travel-photos-italy-fuji-x100s On my recent trip to Italy to shoot the wedding of Robert & Mariam, I got a little extra solo time to do some traveling around on my own.  My goal during this time was to shoot mostly, if not exclusively, with my new Fuji X100S and leave all my Nikon gear in the hotel room while I went out exploring.   Part of me loved the fact that it was so unobtrusive and lightweight compared to a DSLR, and part of me just liked the artistic challenge of shooting my entire travels with one camera and one lens, a fixed 35mm focal length. Having never owned a 35mm lens before, "seeing in 35" took some getting used to but once I got into it...I was in love.   Hands down, this will be my go-to travel cam for some time.

Not having a 35mm lens in my bag for work was another reason this camera was so attractive to me.  (The great reviews of this camera by stellar photogs Zack Arias, David Hobby and Bryan Kraft also had a lot to do with it.)   I often found myself in moments during a wedding where the 24 was too wide and the 50 was too tight.   As I hoped it would, the image quality of the Fuji X100S impressed me so much that I have now worn it on my hip during my last three weddings with the nifty Peak Design belt clip and have gotten some of my favorite shots of the day from it.

Most of the images below are straight out of camera jpeg's. Some, mostly the black and whites, were RAW's seasoned to taste in Lightroom.

Locations (in order): Copenhagen Airport, Milan, Cinque Terre (Monterosso, Vernazza, Manarola), Florence, Siena, Tuscan hills south of Siena, San Gimignano, back to Milan, and eventually home to San Francisco.

]]> (Eric James Photography) Italy Nature Photography Street Travel https://www.ericjamesphoto.com/blog/2013/7/travel-photos-italy-fuji-x100s Sun, 14 Jul 2013 05:53:51 GMT Genevieve & Grayson | Wedding at Skylake Gardens - Chico, CA https://www.ericjamesphoto.com/blog/2013/6/genevieve-grayson-wedding-skylake-gardens Meet two of the nicest, most genuine people on the planet, Genevieve and Grayson.  I became friends with Grayson about two years ago after meeting him at a Google+ photowalk and I eventually met Genevieve on a group trip to Yosemite later that year.  Grayson, who just got hired with the Fire Department, (congrats bud!) is also an insanely talented photographer (check out his work here) so it was a tremendous honor when he asked me to shoot his wedding last month at Skylake Gardens in Durham, CA, near Chico.  I drove up the day before to attend the rehearsal, meet the rest of the gang, and scope out the venue...a beautiful oasis and a truly one-of-a-kind kind of place.  The wedding day was spectacular.  Huge thanks and kudos to all those who helped make it happen and thank you again G&G for letting me be a part of it all. Hope you all enjoy the photos as much as I enjoyed taking them...

I did some thinkin' and eventually suggested a game plan that was a bit ambitious but with the right amount of time, we could pull it off.  Not only are Ivan and Mahathi one of the sweetest couples I have ever met, they were also up for anything...so, together with my good friend Erica Joy, who kindly came along to assist with lighting, we made a day of it.  We started at Ocean Beach for some afternoon rays, went on to Golden Gate Park for golden hour, jammed up to Twin Peaks for sunset, and finished at the Embarcadero meandering beneath the city lights.  I can't wait to do something like this again.  Here are a few of my favorite images with one of my favorite couples...

]]> (Eric James Photography) Bay Area Wedding Photography Bay Bridge Beach Cable Car Embarcadero Golden Gate Park Ocean Beach San Francisco Engagement Shoot San Francisco Wedding Photography Twin Peaks https://www.ericjamesphoto.com/blog/2013/1/ivan-mahathi-engagement-san-francisco Fri, 18 Jan 2013 19:19:40 GMT Melanie & Tom | Engagement Shoot at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk - Santa Cruz, CA https://www.ericjamesphoto.com/blog/2013/1/melanie-tom-engagement-santa-cruz-ca I always try to make sure my shoots are fun.  With a couple like Melanie and Tom, and at a place like the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, though, there was no effort needed.  These two know how to have fun with the best of em, but more on that later.  

 

I knew I really liked these two when the weather forecast all week called for rain on our scheduled shoot day...and their response:  "Bring it."  They understood the notion, the worst weather often makes for the best photography, and they agreed with me, there is just something romantic about rain. On top of that, they had this 'down-for-anything-to-get-the-shot' mentality that is a photographer's dream.  So not only did we all plan for rain with certain shot ideas, rain boots, towels, umbrellas, plastic covers for my gear, etc we actually hoped for it.  I was stoked. 

 

So, of course, what happens when we meet up at 2:00pm... the week-long rain comes to an end, the clouds part, and the sun comes out to play.  Hhhh.  So much for that idea.  A lot of being involved in photography is being able to adapt to changing conditions on the fly, so we were determined not to let a suddenly beautiful sunny day dampen our spirits :).  With the unexpected sun making for some harsh light outside, we headed into the arcade for an intense air-hockey session and a try at the claw machine (sorry, Tom, you were so close!).  Eventually, we headed back outside of course where the real fun began.  We chased birds, jumped in puddles, and watched Tom display some wicked ninja-like levitating skills.  We were eventually graced with wonderful light and a gorgeous sunset that seemed to be Mother Nature's way of telling us, "Seeee...I know what I'm doing."    

 

After a quick break for clam chowder and a beer on the pier, we finished the night where much of the story began for Melanie and Tom...along the the neighborhood streets of Santa Cruz where they had spent many summers prior.  We ultimately ended with a shot at "The Bench" , the very spot where Tom proposed to Melanie last year, complete with an unexpected mini fireworks show that put the cap on an awesome day and left us all with the feeling, "it was meant to be".

]]> (Eric James Photography) Beach Engagement Shoot Santa Cruz Wedding Photography boardwalk sunset https://www.ericjamesphoto.com/blog/2013/1/melanie-tom-engagement-santa-cruz-ca Fri, 11 Jan 2013 20:19:17 GMT Sara & Joe | Engagement Shoot in the Delta https://www.ericjamesphoto.com/blog/2012/12/bay_area_wedding_photography_sara-joe-engagement From the moment I met Sara and Joe, and heard their ideas for an engagement shoot, I was super excited to work with them.  Sara liked the idea of something romantic and vintage like an old town, while Joe wanted to get some shots together with the custom motorcycle he'd been working on.  My wheels started spinning instantly.  Finding new places to shoot is difficult sometimes, but I love the challenge, and every now and then you find some hidden gems that were sitting under your nose the entire time.  Such was the case when I started exploring the wetlands around the San Joaquin and Sacramento River Delta...historic towns, rustic storefronts, winding roads, and vast open plains.  Throw in an awesome couple and a beautiful sunset to ride off into at the end of the day, and it made for one fun and very memorable shoot.  Looking forward to shooting their wedding this summer!

Bob was planning to propose to his longtime girlfriend, and good friend of mine, Mariam, the following week.  He wanted me to be there to capture the moment...but of course, he needed to keep his plan a secret from Mariam.  

 

Bob was open to suggestions on where to do this in order to get some great pics. I remembered Mariam mentioning to me at one point, that not if, but when Bob finally popped the question, she wanted to do their engagement shoot with me in Monterey or Carmel, so I suggested to Bob we do it there.  We could stay for a couple hours after the big moment for more photos around town or at the beach, and make this, quite literally, their engagement shoot.  Sounded like a great plan!

 

But what would be our cover story? How do we get Mariam there without rousing suspicion? How do I show up without being seen?  And where to go exactly?  My first idea was for Bob to make his own plans for a weekend getaway in Carmel with Mariam and then pick a time and a place where I could stay out of sight somehow and shoot the moment all paparazzi style.  But that seemed too tricky.  I didn't know the area well enough and don't live close enough to prescope out places ahead of time. And what if Mariam spotted me?  That would ruin everything. Or what if she insisted on wearing sweat pants all day?  We both figured she would appreciate, after the fact, being dressed up a bit for these photos that will last forever.     

 

In the end, it was agreed that the best plan was for me to do the luring, even though it involved telling a little white lie to a friend for her greater good. (Sorry again Mirmy!) This is what we came up with... I would tell Mariam that I was working with a venue in the area specializing in Carmel wedding photography, they requested some local engagement-style photos for promotion, and I was in desperate need for a couple to stand in as models.  It would be a huge favor to me, I told Mariam.  And yes, of course, I would still do their "official" engagement shoot in Carmel when the time came.  This way, she would be dressed and ready for pictures, be assured she could do it all again 'for real' someday, and it would allow Bob a chance to play the unassuming, cooperative boyfriend.  Bingo!  She was in.

 

I did a little research on cool places in the area and decided that the Carmel Mission looked perfect.  I arrived an hour before they did to get a first-hand look, and confirmed it...this was the spot.   I texted them where to meet me, and soon after we got started, Bob made his move.   As they say, the rest is history...though in their case...it's just the beginning...

The amount of beauty, color, and positive energy was breathtaking, particularly on the dance floor. :) 

 

One very cool element to the wedding: Ravish's brother in Germany could not attend the celebration, so they broadcast the festivities live to him via webcam! Priyanka and Ravish here are giving him a show.
